Meanwhile, in our Sh*tty Congress…

Posted in American Culture & Politics, Health & Medicine by humanb on April 20, 2013

The tragedies in Texas and in Boston and the subsequent manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect have commanded our attention and rightfully so. But something else momentous occurred recently that will directly impact upon the safety of every American.

The United States Senate defeated measures to expand gun control legislation.

This might be one of the best political speeches I’ve heard in my lifetime – not because I share Obama’s position on the need for gun control legislation (which I do), and not because I hold this sh*tty, ineffectual Congress in disdain (which I do) – but because the speech is sincere, candid, thoughtful, smart and powerful. There are no theatrics, no hyperbole, no rhetorical flourishes.  Some of the more fatuous arguments of those against any gun control (or even any debate on gun control) are effectively called into ethical question, and you’re left in no doubt about this politician’s true feelings on gun control in America.  Political speeches don’t get more forthright than this.

Too bad too few paid any notice.

    Wait… What?
The NRA blasted Obama for throwing a temper-tantrum and FOX NEWS has been sniping the Commander in Chief nearly nonstop ever since the speech ended.
Have you been hiding under a rock?

Does not watching Fox News and not following the NRA constitute hiding under a rock? Fox News is a joke (and not a legitimate news source) and the NRA is led by a menace to American society. What matters is not what’s said on Hannity or on Fox and Friends, but what’s done by the American people to protect future generations, promote peace, and advance civilization.

Hey, I’m on your side, but the only reporting/commentary on this story has been negative. Sorry, it frustrates me.

Fox exhausts itself trying to generate specific storylines. Regardless of what is actually happening in the country, if the real news of the day doesn’t translate into “Obama sucks” and “Democrats are anti-American” they’ll generate their own ‘news’ with those messages. I would have an insanely skewed understanding of the country if I spent anytime watching them. I have relatives who follow the news but who had no idea about Obama’s speech which frustrated me, because it meant that the news outlets that covered it didn’t do so enough, and wouldn’t have done so because they assumed the public wasn’t that interested. So I guess who really frustrates me is *us* for not caring enough. Do we all have to lose someone in a mass shooting to want stricter gun laws? That would be pathetic if that were true.
