People Watch: Istanbul

Posted in Foreign Impressions, Travel by humanb on March 24, 2012

I walked the streets of inner city Istanbul for several hours before I saw a local woman.

All the shops and stalls appeared to be staffed only by men.

And if the men weren’t selling something, they were just hanging out.

Or fishing off the pier.

Or en route to places unknown…

After a while, I did start spotting women.

We found the most women in the park, where a large number of people had gathered to picnic and politic.

A few political demonstrations were an interesting prelude to our next stop: Israel.

But the most diverse area by far, was the popular commercial and entertainment area of Taksim.

The people packed shoulder-to-shoulder in Taksim, but the atmosphere was happy and calm.

We really should have tried the famous Turkish ice cream, dondurma, at some point.

But we were usually far too busily engaged in people watching.

Next up: The Grand Bazaar

Wow. The women must be at home giving birth to the men.
