The demonization of snakes

Posted in Australian Culture & Politics by humanb on December 5, 2006

When I was a kid I had a lizard and a snake. The lizard ate crickets and flies and the snake ate cute little goldfish. I can remember one religious person who refused to come to my house with my snake there, because the Bible regarded them as earth crawlers and accursed creatures. In Genesis 3:14, after the serpent convinces Eve to disobey God by eating an apple from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, God speaks to the serpent, saying:

Because thou hast done this,
thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field;
upon thy belly shalt thou go,
and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.

So my pet was cursed. To tell the truth, I was always afraid of it and ultimately got rid of it. I decided to keep cute little goldfish instead. But who wouldn’t be afraid of a snake when you know some can do this to a kangaroo?
